Here is a letter I received from a reader regarding a previous post entitled The Five-Minute Drill, which describes how to handle infants and toddlers who cry when parents attempt to put them to bed. I can’t take credit for the approach – my wife and I heard about the five-minute drill from our physician when we were having the same problem. Nonetheless, it feels good that others are able to find out about it and try it because of this website.
This letter made my day when it arrived...
We are writing to tell you that you have saved our lives. We were having the same problem exactly word for word with our 2 1/2 year old. He would go to sleep after our normal routine and sleep through the night. This all changed about 6 weeks ago, when he became so frightened to go to sleep for his nap and at nighttime. We tried laying down in his room, in our bed, etc. All things that we knew were not right. He would wake up at 3PM every night screaming for us.
We found your website, searching for some answers since we were at the end of our ropes not knowing what to do. We tried it and the first night it took 30 minutes for our son to fall asleep, the second night it took 10 minutes and the third night he fell right asleep within the first 5 minutes. We are so grateful for your advice and would recommend it to anyone. We now have time for us in the evening once our son is asleep.
Signed, Relieved Couple
