Question of the Week # 13: [blank] at First Sight

I've posed some serious relationship questions in past weeks, so I thought I would go with something more fun and lighthearted this time. How would you complete this sentence?

"The first time I laid eyes on my significant other was special because ..."

What was noteworthy, wonderful, or unusual about that very first moment? What story do you like to tell your friends about how you met? If you're currently unattached, maybe you have a story about a former sweetheart.

I'll tell my story next week. (I find if I go first, that often leads the discussion in a specific direction and I'd rather give you free rein to tell your own stories.)

I'm looking forward to hearing what you have to say.

"The first time I laid eyes on my significant other was special because ..."
The first time I laid eyes on him, I was being introduced to him. I was new to the audit department at the bank we both worked for, and he, a seasoned, experienced auditor. Rather than just sort of shaking hands and moving on, he was friendly, and charming and funny.

Not just with me, either, but with all of us who'd been brought in from various business units to learn the ropes of audit. Noticing the ring on his finger, I thought, "Wow, his wife is lucky! I wish there were more single guys like him around," and that was it. I didn't really work with him the entire time I was in that department, and while he was super nice & funny, he was married.

A year and a half later, after he'd split with his now ex-wife, he and I were put on a project together. The rest, as they say, is history...little did I know at that first meeting that instead of being with a guy LIKE him, I would actually get to be his wife one day.

I didn't like him on sight but I learned from that experience you can't always trust your first impression!
I thought he was an arrogant, self absorbed Ass.
He ooozed over confidence and worked my last nerve just by the way he carried himself.
I met him in a restaurant I both worked and hung out at when I was 18.
When I got to know his brother better(as friends) I also got to know him better and saw through his facade.
When he offered to drive me home after a late shift I finally realized on the ride that he was painfully shy and only acted the way he did to hide it.
Now 14 years later we are happily married with an 8 year old daughter and a coughcough13yearoldsoncoughcough.
    ;p

  4. "The first time I ever laid eyes on my significant other was special because..."

It was the worst deja-vu ever. I had dreamt about that exact moment when I was 7. Then to see him there, leaning against the walls of the Byzantine Church at our excavation, wearing the same clothes I had remembered, the same smagh on his head, carrying the same clipboard and the same laugh and smile... and he didn't even see me. I was across the church floor from him. I remember paying attention to him non-stop after that. First impression? This CANNOT be the guy i am supposed ot be married to, he is a man surrounded by adoring girls. Does he even speak English? OMG, he's so hot. Second impression? He's MEAN! (and hot) Third? Oh, wait, he's introverted and shy just like me. And he's really awesome. And hot.

  5. "The first time I laid eyes on my significant other was special because ..." ...he first crossed the street to introduce himself, then immediately excused himself, and came back a few minutes later freshly showered.

My best friend and I were visiting her boyfriend, who lived across the street from this guy. He told me later that he just wanted to meet the girls who had driven to his neighbors house in a Cadillac. (We were only 16 at the time...it belonged to my friend's mother, of course.)

But, it wasn't love at first sight, or even love at second sight. In fact, we knew each other for about a year before we started dating! And it was another 3 years after that before we got married.

FYI: We celebrated our 24th wedding anniversary in October!

Hmmm, our's was a blind-date set up by a mutual friend of ours. I refused to go on a blind-date by myself, so our friend was going with us. (good idea, I thought!)
Well, I had to pick up both guys in my small truck, which was a manual, and ended up driving to our destination with my arm between his legs the whole time and a very, very red face. He also wore too much cologne, (he was 21 years old) and 9 years later, I still love to smell it on him!!

  7. "The first time I laid eyes on my significant other was special because".... all I could see were his eyes. Literally. He was wearing a surgical mask and cap and gown (yes, I know this is like some tacky midday soap), and was giving an anaesthetic to the patient lying between us. I was holding the patient's leg in the air, (which I'll have you know requires great intelligence) while two burly doctors either side of me drilled a whopping great metal pin down into the patient's femur.

My husband's eyes were (and are) languidly compelling. I tried not to stare or think lustful thoughts. My future husband then snapped me out of my reverie by making a dumb joke about women's brains containing a higher percentage of fat. I decided he was cute but, sadly, a jerk.

Luckily, further interactions with my (now) husband convinced me otherwise. He is cute, with languidly compelling eyes, and only very occasionally is he a jerk.

The first time I saw my hubby was special because I could finally put a real, live face to the compassionate, thoughtful, and funny man I had spent countless hours on the telephone with for three months. Also because it was decision time about whether he would be friend or lover. I guess you know the answer to that one.

  9. My friend, a counselor, summed up my reaction the first time I saw my husband - "You look across the room, and the electricity is an instant SNAP, and..............its deep do-do calling to deep do-do....and you should RUN!"

  10. Andrew,

...Did you stop by my blog on Friday?! Because, ironically, I blogged about the first time I met my husband!

I'm not going to reprint it in a comment, so you'll just have to stop by when you have a chance! ;)

  11. I first met my husband in 1984. It was his first play with the theater where it was my second. He was directing, and he cast me. He was always so nice! He was married, and I was married, but we became friends and worked together on many plays over the years, usually with him directing and me acting or stage managing. My marriage broke up in 1985, but when his did in 1989, I realized I loved him. We continued as friends until 1998, when he finally fell in love with me. We married in 2000.

We knew each other for 16 years before we got married. I tell people it's because we don't like to rush things.

Way back when, my best friend kept yammering on and on about this "wonderful" doctor she had met in her new Sunday School class. I secretly thought "her" doctor sounded a bit too impressed with himself. As she spoke on and on about the popular, charismatic, young doctor, though, each story included HIS buddy, a quiet, unassuming, musically inclined graphic artist. I told my friend, "Forget the doctor! Go after his friend! THAT'S the one that sounds like a keeper to me!" I had never met him, but already I knew he was down to earth, responsible, creative, funny, and thoughtful just from the stories I heard about his friend, the doctor. Fortunately, my friend didn't take my advice.

A few weeks later I visited the class with her. The moment I saw his twinkling soft blue eyes and that quiet hint of an ever presnt smile, I was a goner. I had NEVER believed in "love at first sight". I was far too practical for such nonsense. But the moment our eyes met, I KNEW that if I ever married anyone, it would be him...I KNEW in that very moment that if he ever asked me, the answer would be "yes".

A year later he asked, and I said "yes!". It was the first marriage for us both. We were 29. We have been blessed with fifteen and a half years of marriage.

The first time I laid eyes on my significant other was about 10 years ago, when we were both in high school. We went to different schools, so I had never met him before. My friend set me up on a blind date. She came along with a friend of hers...J. Went they came to pick me up, I got in the car and saw J. I was instantly attracted and was very excited about this blind date, until my friend told me that J wasn't my date. The other guy was. Nothing became of the blind date...although we all became good friends. Fast forward a few months, and J and I started dating. It didn't last long...most teenage love doesn't. We lost contact with one another until about a year ago. My husband and I separated, and I moved back to my hometown, and met up with J again. Now we have started dating again...and are very much in love. :-)He has been my rock for the last year.
So... "The first time I laid eyes on my significant other was special because ..." I knew there was a reason that we met...and that we would be in each others lives for a long, long time.

Well let's back up a little. The first time I met my significant other he was on top of the pool table dressed like a biker singing Meatloaf's "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" at the top of his lungs. I saw him and said, "Oh yeah, that's the one I want." You see I was in my dating rebels stage, and thank goodness for me his friends has dressed him up as a joke, and he turned out to be an awesome man. 15 years later we are still together with only a few mild bumps in the road.

So why was the moment special? Well sometimes the old songs play true. "You can’t always get what you want, but you find sometimes, you get what you need." And he, so far, has been exactly what I needed for me.

  16. J and I met at new Year's Eve through mutual friends. I had a boyfriend and they were friends form high school. J was funny, good looking, intelligent and extremely outgoing. I knew at that point I wanted to be his friend. He went overseas with the Army and we corresponded while he was gone. When he came home from Korea for midtour, I was at a cross roads with my boyfriend- realizing he was not the "right" one for me. J and I spent time together and suddenly it seemed that the friendship we shared had the potential to be more... He went back to Korea for 6 more months and we continued to talk. Shortly after he returned, we became an item. I think the frienship we shared made our relationship all that much stronger.

  17. The first time I met my husband was a few years ago. He was a reservist in the Air Force and his father worked for the same company for which I was working. He came into to my shared office, in uniform, to say hi to my co-worker. I was completely taken back by him and was speechless. I only said hi. That was our first encounter.
A couple of years later, we became friends. He took me to a concert, went to church with me, and was just there when I needed him. We went to San Francisco and walked to the end of a long pier. I wanted to kiss him so bad, but was so scared he didn't feel the same way, so I chickened out. A few weeks later, I would find out that he felt the same way. I will never forget the day we decided that we needed to be more than friends. He got off work late and I went to his house to watch a movie. We sat there for what seemed like hours and just talked and gazed into eachother's eyes. It was magic! The next day we went to Santa Cruz and I already knew I loved him.
We will celebrate our third wedding anniversary on Thursday this week, and we have two beautiful children to boot!!!

It was like a snapshot in time. I didn't realize it then, but that moment was cemented in my memory. I remember exactly where we were, what we were doing and even what he was wearing.

I don't have a photograpic memory so for me to remember all that made it special (and the fact that he was the cause)

I met him at work and it was an ordinary meeting at first. But as we saw more and more of each other, the interest bloomed and we became friends. The friendship flourished and everything just evolved from there.

  20. My friends and I were going out to celebrate my birthday later that coming weekend, but for my actual birthday I was home alone and bored. So I "Googled" out of boredom my date of birth hoping to get some giggles on what was in the news, the top song of the day, stuff like that. When up pops a resume' of some computer geek. I soon realized the resume' popped up because his birthday was the same day, month and year as mine. Conveniently his email address was also available.
So I emailed him not knowing nor caring if he was single, handsome, available or looking for friends. I just wanted to say, "Hey you! You stole my birthday and I'd like to have it back." He emailed me back to say, "No, maybe later when I'm 64 and don't want to get older anymore." Back and forth we had wrote enjoying our first internet flame war.
The flames were hot, that is for sure and we really started to enjoy and look forward to one another's emails. Which soon led to chat and telephone calls, then off to Boston I flew to meet him after a good 1 1/2 years. I knew that when I met him face to face I would have felt comfortable and wanted to give him a great big friendly hug. However....
The first time I laid eyes on my significant other was special because ... I knew right then and there he was going to get way more than just a big friendly hug. I slipped him a kiss and then the tongue and after a 20 minute lip-lock the airport security guy asked us to please "get a room" and leave the building.
